Independent voters, make your voice heard!Dear Independent or Third-Party Voter,
Did you know you CAN vote in the upcoming primary in June? The law allows you to make a same-day change to your voter registration, select a major party, vote in the primary, and then change back to being independent. |

My husband – an independent voter – followed those steps in order to vote for me. And it only took 15 minutes.
However, I wish you didn’t have to change your registration at all! It is just not right that as a voter and taxpayer you must – even temporarily – join a major party to vote in an election paid for by your tax dollars. If elected your NM Senator, I want to change this law. I want New Mexico to have open primaries. And I’ve been advocating for that change for years in my professional role as a democracy reform leader.
Many defining political decisions are made in the primaries, and when independents can’t vote, we tend to get more extremist candidates on both sides. Important viewpoints are excluded. In Senate District 9, the race will likely be determined in the primary.
In order for me to champion open primaries in the future, I need your vote today.

How to Change Your Registration
- Go to a polling location during early voting (currently underway) or on Election Day.
- Tell the poll worker that you are an independent or Decline to State (DTS) voter, and that you want to make a temporary same-day voter registration change to Democrat in order to vote in the primary.
- Fill out a short form online and wait a few minutes while they process it.
- Accept the ballot they give you, and vote for Heather Balas for State Senate.
- Go home and change your registration back to Independent (or Third Party) at https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/WebPages/DomesticApplication.aspx, under “Register to Vote”).
I’m sorry for the hassle, but independent voters like you can determine the outcome of this election, which will be very close. Together, let’s change the law so that all independent voters can stay independent and cast their ballots in all future elections.
In gratitude,
